The site itself comprises rock-cut temples representing three major religious traditions: 12 Buddhist caves (circa 500-750 AD), 17 Hindu caves (600-870 AD), and 5 Jain caves (800-1000 AD). Located 29 km from Aurangabad in Maharashtra, India, Ellora’s caves are carved into the cliffs of the Charanandri hills. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983, it remains one of Maharashtra’s most frequented ancient monuments. The coexistence of various religious structures exemplifies the historical tolerance and cultural diversity of India.
